§ACUPUNCTURE

There are many studies which show that acupuncture is effective in relieving a lot of different physiological and psychological conditions. Acupuncture can help to dramatically reduce or eliminate pain, and leave you with the ability to cope better and more effectively with life.

Not sure about acupuncture?

Improve your emotional health by:

Reducing stress - it could be work related, increased alcohol intake, smoking, exams, divorce, pregnancy or maybe just lifestyle. Stress can be overwhelming. Physically, you can feel tired, have sore muscles, dull skin and haphazard sleep patterns. Acupuncture helps you to relax by deactivating the ‘analytical brain’ which is responsible for worry and anxiety.

Calming anxiety - debilitating panic attacks, headaches, pain and insomnia are some of the unwelcome anxiety led symptoms and they are generally treated using medication. Sustained stress means you are stuck in a constant fight or flight mode and you become unable to relax. Acupuncture activates your parasympathetic nervous system which opposes your sympathetic nervous system. This turns off the fight or flight response, enabling you to to feel calm and relaxed.

Lifting depression - low mood, loss of interest in enjoyable activities, anxiety, irritability, low self-esteem, disturbed sleep or appetite, weight change, tiredness, lack of motivation, concentration or libido are unpleasant symptoms associated with depression. Depression can be triggered by stress, bereavement, chronic illness causing long-term pain,  financial difficulties or relationship problems.  Studies indicate that acupuncture has a positive effect on depression by regulating the brain’s mood chemistry increasing the levels of feel good hormones called endorphins and serotonin.

Feel happier and healthier by reducing pain and injury:

Back pain - most back pain is caused by muscle tension, strains, minor injuries and irritated or pinched nerves which acupuncture treats by killing pain,  reducing inflammation and improving muscle stiffness and joint mobility.

Chronic pain - NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) recognises how effective acupuncture can be and recommends it for chronic pain.  Chronic pain often results from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, low back, shoulder and neck pain, headaches and migraines, cancer, fibromyalgia, sciatica, trigeminal neuralgia, irritable bowel syndrome, and endometriosis.

Acupuncture is also used to help with:

Migraines and headaches - the cycle that migraine sufferers often feel is hours of excruciating pain and feelings of depressing nausea followed by the welcome relief of vomiting, receding pain and then sleep. Lost work time, cancelled family plans, strained relationships, loss of confidence means that migraines can destroy quality of life. There’s currently no cure for migraines and medication can cause unpleasant side effects. Acupuncture can reduce the frequency of attacks and effectively improve the life quality of migraine sufferers. NICE recommends acupuncture for migraines.

Digestive problems - In traditional Chinese medicine digestion is at the epicentre of good health. Ulcerative colitis, constipation, diarrhoea, diverticulitis, gas, indigestion, ulcers are all examples of digestive problems and the WHO (World Health Organisation) recommends acupuncture for all of these.

Menstrual problems - many women struggle with intense cramping, headaches, clotting or mood swings associated with their menstrual cycle. Acupuncture can help to regulate your cycle and lessen pain by normalising blood flow.

Menopause - for some women, the menopause and the years leading up to it (perimenopause), can be a time of troubling emotional and physical symptoms. Hot flushes, increased anxiety, memory loss and disturbed sleep are some of the symptoms of the menopause. HRT isn’t always an option and some women would prefer not to take it. Acupuncture helps with the well-being of menopausal women and can also reduce menopausal  symptoms.

Long Covid - although there’s a lot we don’t know about Coronavirus, acupuncture has always been used to heal post-viral symptoms with great success, and is now being used worldwide to help with the many unpleasant and debilitating effects of long Covid. It can help with fatigue, breathlessness, anxiety and depression, palpitations, chest pain, joint or muscle pain and brain fog.

ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS

If you don't think that acupuncture is for you, I offer a variety of alternative treatments, which can also be used in conjunction with acupuncture.

Acupressure with Essential Oils

If you want acupuncture and all its benefits, acupressure is for you. It’s non intrusive and if you are needle sensitive, acupressure and essential oils are extremely effective. Depending on your diagnosis I will choose a wonderfully aromatic essential oil(s) on acupuncture points so that both can work synergistically. The essential oil is absorbed through the acupuncture point on the skin enhancing your well being so that you benefit physically, mentally and even spiritually. The essential oil is the Jing of the plant, its vital essence. In Chinese medicine, Jing is what interacts with the acupuncture point.

The use of essential oils within Chinese medicine dates back to its first documented herbal text - Shen Nong Ben Cao, written in the second century CE. Inhaling an essential oil provides instantaneous healing effects. Scents breach the blood brain barrier via the nasal passages immediately communicating to the olfactory neurons in the brain. Essential oils have a direct therapeutic effect on the mood and emotions. Oils like frankincense, ylang ylang and lavender can help you to feel calm. To protect I use eucalyptus and tea tree to help open up the lungs and increase the capacity to utilise oxygen. I use essential oils on acupuncture points along with needles at other points so you can get the maximum health benefit.

I can send you home with a personalised single or multiple essential oil blend empowering you to take part in your own healing process. You can give yourself quick and easy daily acupressure style treatments fortified with the essential oils. I will instruct you about where to daily apply the oil together with images of point locations on the body.

Cupping

Cupping therapy is like massage and helpful for all sorts of problems like chronic headaches, dizziness, stiff shoulders, constipation, asthma, coughing and back pain. Cupping moves stagnant Qi and Blood. It can treat pain, improve the metabolism, improve blood microcirculation, activate the lymph system and toxin elimination process, tone up the skin and remove pathogenic factors.

Cupping doesn’t only have to be on your back. Depending on your condition cups can be placed below  the collar bone, on the abdomen, on the pelvis, on the back and on legs to relieve pain. I use a beautifully fragranced therapeutic oils on your skin containing ingredients like lemongrass, cajeput, cassia and peppermint. Warm glass cups which create a suction are placed on your oiled skin and if on your back I glide them leaving you to experience a deep relaxation. Sometimes cups are left static on your skin for a few minutes and they leave a mark. This isn’t permanent and they go away after a few days

Moxa

Moxibustion or moxa is placed either directly on the skin or held just above it, over specific acupuncture points or meridians. Moxa is usually made from the dried leafy material of Chinese mugwort (Artemesia argyi or A.vlugaris). The herb is lit and as it smoulders slowly, a therapeutic heat enters the skin and affects the flow of ‘Qi’ (energy) and blood in the area being treated. In traditional Chinese medicine, moxibustion is used on people who have cold or stagnant conditions. The burning of moxa is believed to expel cold and warm the meridians, which leads to a smoother flow of blood and Qi.

Abdominal Sacral Massage

An incredible massage treatment that’s effective for those with constipation and other digestive problems, endometriosis, painful menstrual cycles, menstrual headaches, fertility issues, menopause and fibroids.  I work on all your vital organs, digestive system, the small & large intestine, diaphragm, ileocecal valve and your lower back and sacrum. It helps relieve muscular as well as emotional tension and boosts blood, nerve and lymph supply in areas that are so forgotten about or hidden away.

Abdominal sacral massage is for women and men and I combine it with acupuncture or for those who don’t like needles it can be mixed with cupping.
